the most special day of our lives

spent this past weekend making giant, ornate wedding cakes in the back of a hot and sweaty bakery. it was an odd and rather surreal experience to spend the day frankensteining these monsters from countless slabs of spongecake, innumerable pounds of buttercream and as many forms of sugar as possible. and there was sweat and blood and cursing while hurtling towards breakneck deadlines. then frenzied runs out to my boss' clutter-ridden mini van with spatulas and piping bags and tiny plastic couples flying out of my arms. driving driving driving through victoria's nonsense streets with boss man dragging on a cigarette and laughing at his own hilariously innappropriate comments. then into serene, opulent buildings populated by men in suits and women in pastel taffeta. suddenly these bizarre creations we had laboured on were hoisted onto pedestals and became beautiful, grand, perfect. people gasped, brides exclaimed and sun shone through huge windows onto starched white table cloths. we made 6 of them in 2 days.

been out to sidney spit, cortes island and mount doug in the past few weeks. i know few things that compete with the rough beauty of a west coast summer.
